Enterprising Women of the Year Awards
Finalist Over $1 million and up to $5 million in annual revenues

Debra Faraone The Elements, Inc.

Shirley Lam Connetquot West, Inc.

Debra Farone

The Elements is a business that helps organizations develop vehicles to promote brand awareness through the use of creative brand solutions. With $2.1 million in annual sales, this Great Falls, VA-based business has grown dramatically by instituting a solid business plan and setting measurable goals. Owner Debra Fareone has invested in the "human capital and technology" needed to sustain growth.

Debra gives back through her involvement in organizations that promote entrepreneurial women. She serves on the board of the Women Presidents' Educational Organization, and is chair of the Women's Enterprise Leadership Forum. She is also a member of the Women Presidents' Organization.

Her advice to other women business owners? Develop a plan and invest in the resources necessary to manage your business. She also urges other women business owners to certify their businesses as women-owned and support other women-owned businesses.

Shirley Lam

Connetquot West is a wholesale and retail distributor of medical supplies and durable medical equipment. With today's aging baby boomer population, Shirley Lam's company is poised for dramatic growth. She carries a full line of incontinence products, surgical gloves, nutritional supplements, wound care and diabetic supplies, and other personal care products.

With $3.9 million in annual sales, the Farmingdale, NY-based company hopes to grow into a national firm, and ultimately be a global supplier.

Shirley gives back to her community through her work with Chinese immigrant services, helping new arrivals adjust and get a head start on their new lives.

She recalls the companies' early struggle of going from one bank to another, looking for a bank that would take a chance on her firm. She found one and has remained a loyal customer. She advises other women entrepreneurs to "hire the best people you can, develop your sales force, and find a good accountant."
